Trump Chooses J.D. Vance as Vice Presidential Candidate

Reaction and Contenders

Biden’s reelection campaign criticized Vance for saying he would have allowed “multiple slates of electors” to challenge Biden’s victory over Trump four years ago. Trump had promoted false claims of election fraud before and after January 6, 2021, when his supporters stormed the Capitol. “Donald Trump picked J.D. Vance as his running mate because Vance will do what Mike Pence wouldn’t on January 6: bend over backwards to enable Trump and his extreme MAGA agenda, even if it means breaking the law and no matter the harm to the American people,” Biden campaign chair Jen O’Malley Dillon said in a statement.

Florida Sen. Marco Rubio and North Dakota Gov. Doug Burgum, the other contenders on Trump’s shortlist, were informed earlier Monday that they were not selected. Conversations between Rubio and Trump’s campaign focused on concerns about both men residing in Florida, and Rubio was unwilling to uproot his family.

Vance’s Political Journey

Vance’s relationship with Trump has evolved over time. Initially a harsh critic, Vance described Trump as “a total fraud,” “a moral disaster,” and “America’s Hitler.” However, he later shifted his tone, citing Trump’s performance in office as a reason for his change of heart. “I didn’t think he was going to be a good president,” Vance told Fox News. “He was a great president. And it’s one of the reasons why I’m working so hard to make sure he gets a second term.”

Vance received Trump’s endorsement during his Senate campaign in 2022, which helped him secure victory in a crowded Republican primary and a tough general election. He is close to Trump’s son, Donald Jr., who praised Vance’s articulation and background.

Vance’s Background

Vance’s memoir, “Hillbilly Elegy,” highlighted the struggles of Appalachian communities and provided insights into Trump’s appeal in middle America. The book was a bestseller but faced criticism for oversimplifying rural life and ignoring the role of racism in modern politics.

Vance was born in Middletown, Ohio, and his book was adapted into a 2020 movie by Ron Howard. With his grandmother’s encouragement, Vance served in the Marine Corps, including in Iraq, graduated from Ohio State University and Yale Law School, and worked in a Silicon Valley investment firm before returning to Ohio. He launched a nonprofit aimed at developing opioid addiction treatments, but it was shuttered after limited success.

As a senator, Vance has shown some willingness to work across the aisle. He has partnered with Ohio’s senior senator, Democrat Sherrod Brown, on various issues important to the state, including securing funding for a $20 billion Intel chip facility and introducing rail safety legislation after the East Palestine, Ohio derailment.

Vance’s Role Pivotal in Shaping 2024 Trump Campaign

The selection of Sen. JD Vance as Donald Trump’s running mate brings a mix of loyalty and controversy to the Republican ticket. Vance’s transformation from a Trump critic to a staunch supporter underscores the shifting dynamics within the GOP. His youth and outsider status add a new dimension to the campaign, appealing to Trump’s base while also facing scrutiny from opponents. As the campaign progresses, Vance’s role will be pivotal in shaping the narrative and direction of Trump’s bid for the presidency in 2024.
