The United States is augmenting its military presence in the Middle East to defend Israel against potential attacks from Iran and its proxies and to safeguard US troops, according to the Pentagon.
Strategic Military Movements
Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin announced on Friday that he has ordered the deployment of more ballistic missile defense-capable cruisers and destroyers to the Middle East and Europe. Additionally, an extra fighter jet squadron will be sent to the Middle East. Austin mentioned that the US is also taking measures “to increase our readiness to deploy additional land-based ballistic missile defense.”
The USS Abraham Lincoln aircraft carrier strike group will be moved to the Middle East to “maintain a carrier strike group presence,” replacing the USS Theodore Roosevelt carrier strike group following the conclusion of its deployment.
Rising Tensions and Retaliation
This week, tensions in the Middle East escalated significantly after the deaths of top leaders from the militant groups Hamas and Hezbollah. Iran and its proxies have vowed revenge. Iran’s Revolutionary Guards stated on Saturday that Tehran’s retaliation would be “severe and (taken) at an appropriate time, place, and manner,” as reported by Reuters.
On Thursday night, President Biden reaffirmed his commitment to support Israel during a conversation with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. On Friday morning, Austin reiterated to Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant “ironclad U.S. support for Israel’s security,” according to Pentagon deputy press secretary Sabrina Singh. Austin emphasized that while the US is taking additional measures to support Israel, its priority is to prevent a broader conflict in the Middle East.
