A tragic incident occurred in Brazil’s Sao Paulo state on Friday when a passenger plane crashed into a gated residential community in the city of Vinhedo. The crash claimed the lives of all 61 people aboard the aircraft, leaving behind a devastating scene. According to officials and the airline Voepass, the plane, an ATR 72 twin-engine turboprop, was en route to Sao Paulo’s international airport Guarulhos.
The Crash and Immediate Response
The crash occurred approximately 80 kilometers (50 miles) northwest of Sao Paulo, within the city of Vinhedo. Fortunately, there were no reported casualties on the ground in the residential area where the plane landed. Witnesses at the scene confirmed that no local residents were harmed, though the aftermath left a smoldering wreck in its wake.
The flight, carrying 57 passengers and 4 crew members, had departed from Cascavel in Parana state. Voepass provided a passenger manifest but did not disclose the nationalities of those on board. The airline expressed its deep regret in a statement, saying, “The company regrets to inform that all 61 people on board flight 2283 died at the site. At this time, Voepass is prioritizing provision of unrestricted assistance to the victims’ families and effectively collaborating with authorities to determine the causes of the accident.”

National Mourning and Rescue Efforts
President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, attending an event in southern Brazil, announced the news of the crash and called for a moment of silence in remembrance of the victims. In response to the tragedy, he declared three days of national mourning.
Rescue teams, including state firefighters, military police, and the civil defense authority, were swiftly dispatched to the crash site. Sao Paulo’s public security secretary, Guilherme Derrite, confirmed that no survivors had been found and announced that the plane’s black box had been recovered. Eyewitnesses, such as a resident named Ana Lucia de Lima, shared their harrowing experiences: “I thought it was going to fall in our yard. It was scary, but thank God there were no victims among the locals. It seems that the 62 people inside the plane were the real victims, though.”
