Steelers May Be Lucky to Have Missed Out on Brandon Aiyuk
Initially, Pittsburgh fans were disappointed about missing out on Aiyuk, but less than a month into the season, it appears the Steelers may have dodged a bullet.
Aiyuk entered Week 3 with just six catches for 71 yards over two gamesâa surprising stat line for a receiver of his caliber. In Week 1 against the New York Jets, he managed only two receptions for 28 yards on a limited snap count. The following week, against the Minnesota Vikings, he recorded four catches for 43 yards. By Week 3, Aiyuk had taken a backseat to wide receiver Jauan Jennings, who stepped up admirably in the absence of Deebo Samuel and tight end George Kittle. Adding to the concern, Aiyuk has been struggling with uncharacteristic drops, raising questions about his focus and consistency.
Meanwhile, the Steelersâ reliance on their younger talent is starting to pay dividends. Despite lacking a veteran wide receiver opposite Pickens, Pittsburghâs emerging players have seized the opportunity to develop and showcase their skills.
Calvin Austin III, a fourth-round pick in the 2022 NFL Draft, delivered a standout performance during the teamâs 20-10 victory over the Los Angeles Chargers in Week 3. Austin caught four passes for 95 yards and a touchdown, including an explosive 55-yard score. Before this breakout game, he had only 13 receiving yards through two games, but he now holds the second-most receiving yards on the team behind Pickens. This surge in performance underscores the potential of the Steelersâ young roster.
NFC West Standings
The San Francisco 49ers are struggling early in the season, currently at the bottom of the NFC West with a disappointing 1-2 record. Their slow start and inconsistency have put them behind their divisional competitors, leaving room for concern as they look to turn things around.

Aiyuk is not the first player to experience the negative effects of holding out. Even some of the leagueâs best have dealt with rust and decreased performance following contractual disputes in recent years. Niners defensive end Nick Bosa admitted that his holdout last offseason affected him âa little bitâ and prevented him from being âlocked inâ with his usual game rhythm. Similarly, Dallas Cowboys left guard Zack.
Martin echoed these sentiments during minicamp this offseason. Martin held out of training camp in 2023, missing three weeks before the Cowboys added an additional $8.5 million across the next two seasons on his contract. While the 34-year-old earned his ninth Pro Bowl and seventh first-team All-Pro selection in 2023, he felt that he âcame up a little bit shortâ of being the âdominant playerâ he has been throughout his career.
A Fortunate Missed Opportunity for the Steelers
Had the Steelers traded for Aiyuk, they might now be dealing with the repercussions of a holdout they had no part in orchestrating. Integrating a player struggling to regain form after a contractual dispute could have disrupted team chemistry and hindered the development of their young receiving corps. Instead, Pittsburgh is witnessing the rise of homegrown talent like Calvin Austin III, which not only fills the void left by veteran departures but also bodes well for the teamâs future. In retrospect, missing out on Aiyuk may have been a favorable turn of events, allowing the Steelers to build a cohesive unit poised for long-term success without the complications that might have accompanied the high-profile receiver.
