Prime Minister Albanese visited Ahmed al Ahmed in hospital, where the 42-year-old Syrian-born fruit shop owner was scheduled for further surgery for shotgun wounds to his left shoulder and upper body. Albanese described him as “a true Australian hero” and praised the nation’s unity in the face of terrorism: “We are a brave country. Ahmed al Ahmed represents the best of our country. We will not allow this country to be divided. That is what the terrorists seek. We will unite. We will embrace each other, and we’ll get through this.”
Bondi Beach lifeguards were also recognized for their bravery during the attack. Rory Davey performed an ocean rescue as people fled into the sea, while Jackson Doolan sprinted barefoot with a first aid kit toward the scene from Tamarama Beach. Reality TV personality Anthony Caroll stated, “These guys are community members and it’s not about the surf. They heard the gunshots and they left the beach and came right up the back here into the scene of the crime, into harm’s way while those bullets were being shot.”
Thousands have visited Bondi Beach to pay respects at an impromptu memorial, including former Prime Minister John Howard. Israeli Ambassador to Australia Amir Maimon, welcomed by Jewish leaders, said, “I’m not sure that my vocabulary is rich enough to express how I feel. My heart is torn apart because the Jewish community, the Australians of Jewish faith, the Jewish community is also my community.” In the wake of the tragedy, Australians set a record by signing up to donate blood, with nearly 50,000 appointments booked on Monday alone, more than double the previous record. Lifeblood reported that almost 1,300 people donated for the first time, causing appointments to fill completely through Dec. 31 at the Bondi location, with donation queues of up to four hours reported in Sydney.
