Shooting at Minneapolis Catholic School Leaves Two Children Dead and 17 Injured

Contents

Hospitals Treat Dozens of Victims

Medical teams across Minneapolis worked quickly to treat the victims. Dr. Thomas Wyatt, chair of emergency medicine at Hennepin County Medical Center, said the hospital received 11 patients, including nine children between the ages of six and 14. Four required surgery, but none of those admitted to the hospital died.

Children’s Minnesota hospital reported that five children were admitted for care but declined to release more information, citing patient privacy.

Witness Accounts

For parishioner Renee Lego, whose children were both present during the shooting, the experience was harrowing. Her eighth grader initially mistook the sound of gunfire for “fireworks or a gas explosion” until he saw people collapsing.

“Both my kids have blood on them,” she told the Minneapolis Star Tribune. “It’s just horrific – so cowardly. This person knew this was our first all-school mass of the year. It was obviously planned. This is the children’s mass, not an advertised mass for the public.”

The Department of Homeland Security, through Secretary Kristi Noem, announced that the agency was monitoring the situation.

Community in Shock

The Catholic school, which serves preschool through eighth grade, had just reopened for the academic year on Monday. Earlier this week, the school’s Facebook page had shown photos of smiling students parking bikes and greeting friends after summer break.

Wednesday’s tragedy added to a violent stretch in Minneapolis, where three separate shootings over the previous 24 hours left three people dead and at least eight others wounded.

The K-12 School Shooting Database reported that there have already been more than 140 shootings at elementary and secondary schools across the United States in 2025.

Conclusion

The Minneapolis Catholic school shooting left a community devastated as families, city leaders, and the nation grappled with the reality of two young lives lost and many more injured. With officials continuing their investigations and hospitals treating victims, the incident underscores the tragic toll of gun violence in schools and places once thought safe.
