President Trump recently showed signs that he supported gun control. Now it was reported that he might be still backing the N.R.A.
Trump had asked that some sort of reform be implemented in regards to gun purchase age limit. He also suggested that teachers could possibly be armed. Another proposal was made against bump stocks.
The N.R.A. had issues with the age limit and the bump stocks. Trump’s televised meeting regarding gun control made the N.R.A. angry.
There was also a report that a Russian politician claimed he gained access to Trump through the N.R.A.
For Or Against?
Trump’s behavior has many wondering whose side was he really on when it came to gun control.
Dana Loesch, N.R.A. spokesperson believed Trump was playing both sides.
“I think he’s just entertaining both sides,” said Loesch. “I think he’s listening to see what both sides have to say.”
“Right now it seems like they’re just in the discussion phase, which is good,” she added. “I would hope that they would be talking to everyone and really hearing what the voters have to say.”
A tweet by Chris Cox left many wondering what Trump was up to. Cox, top lobbyist for the N.R.A. tweeted that his meeting was productive,
“We all want safe schools, mental health reform and to keep guns away from dangerous people. POTUS & VPOTUS support the Second Amendment, support strong due process and don’t want gun control. #NRA #MAGA,” he tweeted.
Trump later tweeted “Good (Great) meeting in the Oval Office tonight with the NRA!”
N.R.A. Connections
The claims by Alexander Torshin, a former Russian Senator and the Deputy Governor of Russia’s central bank didn’t go unnoticed.
He said that he had connections to Trump through the N.R.A. This was based on a tweet he made back in 2015.
Torshin tweeted that “I know D. Trump (through NRA). A decent person,”
He also tweeted “I was there at Obama’s last election! The NRA card, to me as an observer from Russia, opened access to any [polling] station.”
Democrat Adam Schiff thought such a matter was worth looking into.
“I can’t go into what we’ve been able to learn thus far on that issue. I can tell you it’s one of deep concern to me and to other members of the committee, that we get to the bottom of these allegations that the Russians may have sought to funnel money through the NRA,” Schiff said. “It would be negligent of us not to investigate.”
