President Trump’s latest meeting with lawmakers was a shocker for some. He had taken a much firmer stance on gun control. He wanted to implement measures that he believed could help curb the use of assault weapons by individuals.
Trump spoke to Democrats and Republicans about what he would like to see implemented. His seemingly changed stance on gun control surprised and angered some Republicans. They had been opposed to any changes in regards to gun laws.
Trump also made the N.R.A. angry by his announcements and they responded angrily. After the remarks they reached out to their Republican partners.
This was certainly a battle about gun legislation, but the outcome should be based on what’s best for the Country and not just one organization.
Gun Control Opposers
The N.R.A. and Trump’s own colleagues were up in arms with his intentions to see some sort of reform regarding gun laws.
“We’re not ditching any constitutional protections simply because the last person the President talked to today doesn’t like them,” Senator Ben Sasse.
“While today’s meeting made for great TV, the gun control policies discussed would make bad policy that wouldn’t keep our children safer,” said Jennifer Baker.
Baker, a spokeswoman for the N.R.A.’s lobbying arm made her comments after the televised meeting was seen on live.
She added “we are going to continue to work to pass policies that might actually prevent another horrific tragedy.”
Gun Control
Trump talked about measures like the age for buying a gun. He said the age should move from 18 to 21.
Trump asked that many of the policies be looked at, and talked about better security for schools. He also talked about doing background checks on persons seeking to buy a gun.
“You saw the President clearly saying not once, not twice, not three times, but like 10 times, that he wanted to see a strong universal background check bill,” said Senator Amy Klobuchar. “He didn’t mince words about it. So I do not understand how then he could back away from that.”
“You’ve got to have defense, too,” the President told the lawmakers. “You can’t just be sitting ducks. And that’s exactly what we’ve allowed people in these buildings and schools to be.”
Trump had thrown the idea out about arming teachers when he spoke to students and parents days after the shooting. However he also thought the idea might be controversial.
Trump commented on the background check idea asking that more be done to improve that system.
“It would be nice to add everything on to it,” Mr. Trump said. “Maybe change the title. Maybe we could make it much more comprehensive and have one bill.”
