The President had recently tweeted that North Korea had agreed to denuclearization but some say they haven’t.
It appeared that they agreed to stop testing and dismantle a test site but nothing more.
Nevertheless this was still considered a major step since the two leaders were at loggerheads just months before.
It was good news to hear that Kim Jong-un was willing to stop testing of missiles and have talks with Trump.
A few days earlier Trump said he would walk out of meeting with Kim if it wasn’t fruitful.
The location of the meeting hadn’t been given at this point, but South Korea played a vital role in the meeting taking place.
Asian Persuasion
“I told President Trump that in our meeting, North Korean leader Kim Jong Un said he’s committed to denuclearization,” South Korea’s National Security Adviser said. “Kim pledged that North Korea will refrain from any further nuclear or missile tests.”
This statement was quite different from what the President was claiming. Was it possible this was Trump’s way of saying what he expected to happen?
Could having a fruitful result at those talks be about total denuclearization?
The statement begs to differ as it seemed unlikely that Kim would totally give up his arms and be a sitting duck.
“Look, this is a great public relations effort by Kim Jong-un. And I think people recognize that,” Sen. Bob Corker.
When asked if he felt Kim would consent to such, Corker felt caution should be taken.
“Well, I don’t think he said anything about denuclearizing on the front end necessarily,” he said.
Nuclear Tact
It was possible that Kim could be playing games. The tension between the two leaders was very heated for months. The men were known to call each other by demeaning names and made many threats.
This talk shouldn’t be taken lightly and the World may be hoping that these talks would bring about a peaceable solution between the two.
It would also mean the leaders would be more at ease and some level of calmness would return to the Korean Peninsula.
Regarding denuclearization the Senator said it would be very unlikely, but this would only be clear after the talks, once they took place.
“Is it realistic that he’s just willy-nilly going to do that? Absolutely not,” Corker said. “But, you know, progress can be made, freezing the program, who knows what he’s — what his ambitions are as it relates to South Korea.”
“Well, I think this announcement on Friday is better than continued testing, but it’s not much better than that,” he said. “But I do think they show that the President has put Kim Jong Un on the wrong foot for the first time.”
