Nancy Pelosi clarified on ABC News that she did not urge President Joe Biden to step down but was advocating for “a campaign that would win.” The former speaker emphasized her goal was to ensure a victorious campaign for the Democratic Party.
Behind-the-Scenes Pressure Campaign
Pelosi played a significant role in the internal pressure campaign within her party, pushing for Biden to end his campaign last month. Despite this, she has recently denied calling members as the list of Democratic defectors grew. “I wasn’t asking him to step down. I was asking for a campaign that would win,” Pelosi stated on ABC’s “Good Morning America.” She added, “And I wasn’t seeing that on the horizon.”
Pelosi’s Influence and Communications
At 84, Pelosi remains a powerful influence in her party, even after stepping down from Democratic leadership at the start of this Congress. She insisted that the only direct call she made regarding the 2024 Democratic ticket was to the president himself. “People said I was burning up the airwaves. No, I wasn’t. The only person that I spoke to about this was the president,” Pelosi clarified. “Other people called me about what their views were about it — but I rarely even returned a call, much less initiated one.”
