A Pakistani national residing in Canada was apprehended earlier this week, charged with plotting a terrorist attack aimed at a Jewish community center in Brooklyn, New York. The arrest was part of a coordinated effort between U.S. and Canadian law enforcement agencies. The suspect, identified as Muhammad Shahzeb Khan, was caught while allegedly attempting to travel from Canada to New York City to execute his plan.
Details of the Planned Attack
Khan, aged 20 and also known under the alias Shahzeb Jadoon, was reportedly in communication with undercover agents, to whom he revealed his intentions to target the Chabad center in Brooklyn. This center serves as the headquarters for the Hasidic sect, Chabad-Lubavitch. His arrest occurred on the one-year anniversary of an attack by Hamas that initiated the Gaza war, a timing that suggests the symbolic importance of the date to the suspect.
According to U.S. Attorney General Merrick Garland, Khan aimed to “slaughter as many Jewish people as possible, in the name of ISIS,” marking a stark reminder of the threat posed by ideologically motivated violence. Khan faces charges of attempting to provide material support and resources to ISIS, which stands for the Islamic State of Iraq and al-Sham.
Response and Statements from Authorities
Garland emphasized that communities in the United States should never have to live in fear of such hate-driven attacks. The statement from Michael Duheme, commissioner of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, echoed this sentiment, denouncing the planned antisemitic violence and asserting that there is no place for such actions in Canada.
The U.S. Justice Department revealed that Khan had been disseminating ISIS propaganda and expressing his allegiance to the terror group on social media platforms and encrypted messaging apps since November of the previous year. His communications included details on forming an active terrorist cell and acquiring weapons such as AR-style rifles and hunting knives to carry out attacks specifically against “Israeli Jewish chabads” in the United States.
