Attorney General Pam Bondi and Democratic Senator Richard Blumenthal of Connecticut engaged in a heated confrontation during a Senate Judiciary Committee oversight hearing on Tuesday. The exchange intensified when Blumenthal questioned Bondi about the lobbying activities of her former firm, Ballard Partners, particularly concerning a merger involving American Express GBT.
Blumenthal asked, “In the merger that took place involving American Express GBT [Global Business Travel], I understand that Brian Ballard, longtime backer and head of the law firm where you worked, was instrumental in lobbying the Justice Department to drop that lawsuit. … What conversations did you have with Mr. Ballard?” The question aimed to clarify Bondi’s interactions with Ballard during the merger process.
Bondi responded with sharp indignation, immediately turning the accusation back on Blumenthal. She stated, “Sen. Blumenthal, I cannot believe that you would accuse me of impropriety when you lied about your military service. You lied, you admitted you lied to be elected a U.S. senator.” She continued, speaking over Blumenthal, “How dare you? I’m a career prosecutor. Don’t you ever challenge my integrity. Do not question my ability to be fair and impartial as attorney general, and anything [about] my former firm Ballard Partners.”
The controversy surrounding Blumenthal’s military record stems from his acknowledgment in 2010 that he had “misspoken” regarding claims of serving in Vietnam. While he did serve in the Marine Corps Reserve during the Vietnam War era, he never served in Vietnam itself. This prior admission was referenced by Bondi as a counterpoint to the accusations regarding her professional conduct.
