The U.S Government was in the process of finalizing its arrangement to meet with Kim Jong-un. Trump was also expected to meet with a top official from the DPRK.
Now there was a new twist as Russia asked the North Korean leader to visit his Country. He made the suggestion as he met with Kim and expressed his desire to have him visit.
Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov spoke to the North Korean leader in an effort to stay in the race of International relations of that Region.
Russia considered the Korean Peninsula a place of importance as it pushed to have influence among China and surrounding Countries.
Come Visit
“Come to Russia. We would be very happy to see you,” Lavrov said.
Lavrov made the proposal as he sat opposite to Kim during their meeting.
It was clear that Moscow “cannot afford to be remembered as the Country that had no hat in the ring leading up to June 12,” he said. “From a longer-term perspective, Russia hopes to foster economic cooperation with both North and South Korea.”
This implied that their intention was to be part of any agreement that North Korea was willing to make.
Jeong Hyung-gon said “It won’t be easy for Kim Jong Un to turn down an official invitation, so I think it would be after the June 12 summit, which would help him to hold a successful summit with the U.S.”
Hyung-gon, a research fellow at the Korea Institute for International Economic Policy believed that it was in Kim’s best interest to visit after the summit.
Trump Hopeful
The latest invite from Russia could be an indicator of Russia’s intent on being a World leader in International affairs.
Russia was considered one of the biggest super powers, one of few who could possibly make America take notice of their presence.
However as Trump planned his meeting with an official from North Korea, he was hopeful of meeting with Kim soon.
“I look forward to seeing what’s in the letter,” Trump told reporters Thursday. Of preparations for a summit, the President said: “It’s going along very well.”
“This is a difficult challenge, make no mistake about it,” Mike Pompeo said the talks. “There remains a great deal of work to do.”
The biggest concern for Trump was how genuine was Kim’s word and would he be able to garner a meaningful partnership going forward.
“It will take bold leadership from Chairman Kim Jong Un if we are able to seize this once in a lifetime opportunity to change the course of the world,” Pompeo said.
