Elon Musk Abruptly Quits Trump Administration After Major Fallout

DOGE’s Future Without Musk

Musk’s government role was set to expire near the end of May, bringing to a close his 130-day stint. The White House has made it clear that DOGE will continue its mission to reform and reduce the federal government. Cabinet secretaries are reportedly in discussions about how to proceed while maintaining cooperation with Congressional Republicans. While elements of DOGE’s framework may remain in place, department leaders are expected to regain greater authority over hiring and budget decisions.

Musk expressed confidence in the ongoing mission, stating, “The DOGE mission will only strengthen over time as it becomes a way of life throughout the government.” According to a Reuters review of agency records, DOGE has helped reduce the federal civilian workforce by approximately 260,000 employees—about 12% of the 2.3 million total—through a mix of buyouts, early retirements, and firing threats.

However, the initiative also faced significant hurdles. Several federal courts reversed DOGE’s attempts to dismantle certain agencies, and cost-cutting measures reportedly triggered increased purchasing delays, inflated costs, and a loss of specialized scientific and technological personnel.

Backlash and Investor Pressure Intensify

Musk’s criticism of the Republican tax and budget legislation on CBS News on Tuesday added to growing discontent. “I was disappointed to see the massive spending bill, frankly, which increases the budget deficit, not just decreases it, and undermines the work that the DOGE team is doing,” he stated.

That televised critique reportedly angered senior White House officials and is believed to have further accelerated his exit. Beyond politics, Musk faced pressure from Tesla investors who were frustrated by his dual role and wanted him to refocus on reversing declining sales and a faltering stock price.

Musk has defended his unique position, noting that his role was granted by Trump to challenge and dismantle parts of the federal structure. He had invested nearly $300 million in Trump’s 2024 presidential campaign and other Republican candidates. However, at an economic forum in Qatar earlier this month, Musk signaled a reduction in his political involvement, stating, “I think I’ve done enough.”

A Tumultuous Tenure Ends

Elon Musk’s exit from the Trump administration marks the conclusion of a bold yet contentious chapter in government reform. While DOGE will continue without him, his aggressive tactics, public clashes, and ultimately unmet goals have left a complicated legacy. Whether the administration can maintain DOGE’s momentum without the billionaire’s headline-making presence remains to be seen.
