The President of the United States of America Donald Trump had finally chosen his pick to replace Justice Anthony Kennedy.
His choice Judge Brett Kavanaugh who currently sat on the Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit.
Kennedy announced his decision to resign from active service and a replacement was expected to take his place soon.
Now it was estimated that Trump’s choice for the position would face stiff opposition. It was believed that the process could be expensive and intense.
Sen. Susan Collins said she would scrutinize the President’s choice as she wants to back someone trustworthy.
Democrats reportedly planned to use health care as their strategy to push against Kavanaugh for the post.
Trump’s Choice
“The President’s unveiling is like the starting gun to a very intense campaign,” said Ron Bonjean .“Both sides will have incredible resources to bring to bear. Having said that, the Republicans have the upper hand because of the President’s megaphone.”
Ron Bonjean, a former congressional GOP staffer had dealt with this type of scenario before.
Analysts are looking for Trump’s choice to cause shock waves through the judicial system and create his own legacy.
Rick Santorum said, “He is from Washington. He is the establishment pick. He is the Bush pick.”
“It just seems like Trump in this case just bowed to the elite in Washington. I think that’s going to rub a lot of people the wrong way,” Santorum added. “I don’t think it’s going to be a game changer, but I think it’s not a, ‘Yeah, let’s go get them,’ kind of moment for Trump.”
Senate’s Decision
It will now be up to the Senate to decide if they will accept Trump’s choice.
Kavanaugh said he will begin meeting with Senators as he makes his bid for the post.
“I will tell each Senator that I revere the Constitution. I believe that an independent judiciary is the crown jewel of our constitutional republic,” Kavanaugh said.
Analysts talked about how using health care could benefit the Democrats.
“The more Democrats spend talking about what’s at stake when it comes to policies, the better off they’re going to be in November,” Manley said. “Folks are becoming a lot more sensitive to the Republican effort to take away health care.”
“This nomination poses a real and immediate threat to one of our most basic rights and places our freedom to make fundamental decisions about our reproductive lives in great peril,” said Andrea Miller.
Miller, the President of NIRH felt that Kavanaugh would be a big threat to health care, hence the effort to push that topic.
All attention will now be on the Senators who make the final decision and the arguments brought by both sides.
