Context of the Ongoing Conflict
The Jerusalem shooting marks one of the deadliest incidents of its kind since the war in Gaza began following the Hamas-led October 7, 2023, terrorist attack in Israel. That assault killed more than 1,200 people, most of them civilians, according to Israeli officials. Hamas and its allies also captured 251 Israelis as hostages, around 50 of whom remain in Gaza, with 20 still believed to be alive, according to Prime Minister Netanyahu.
Israel’s military operations in Gaza, launched in response to the October 2023 attack, have resulted in the deaths of at least 64,522 Palestinians, most of them civilians, according to figures released by the health ministry in Gaza. The United Nations regards these figures as the most reliable currently available.
Israel Expands Gaza City Operation
On Saturday, Israel’s army urged residents of Gaza City, long the most populated area of the enclave, to evacuate southward to a designated humanitarian zone as military operations intensified. Gaza City, home to nearly one million people, has already seen neighborhoods declared “red zones” as evacuation orders preceded heavy fighting.
Aid organizations have repeatedly warned that mass evacuations could worsen the humanitarian crisis, as displaced Palestinians face repeated uprooting after nearly two years of war. The Israeli military stated that al-Muwasi, a tent camp in southern Gaza, was being designated as a humanitarian zone. Military spokesperson Avichay Adraee said civilians could use a designated road to travel without being searched.
Despite the designation, Israeli forces have struck humanitarian areas throughout the conflict, including al-Muwasi, which had previously been labeled a safe zone.
Ceasefire Proposal and Diplomatic Pressure
The Jerusalem attack also coincided with discussions of a new ceasefire proposal reportedly brokered by the United States. Hamas confirmed it was reviewing the plan, which was delivered on Sunday.
Former U.S. President Donald Trump issued a warning on his Truth Social platform, writing, “Everyone wants the Hostages HOME. Everyone wants this War to end! The Israelis have accepted my Terms. It is time for Hamas to accept as well. I have warned Hamas about the consequences of not accepting. This is my last warning, there will not be another one!”
The proposal reportedly calls for the immediate return of all remaining Israeli hostages, both alive and deceased, on the first day of a ceasefire, followed by negotiations to bring an end to the war.
Foreign Minister Saar confirmed that Israel had accepted the proposal. Hamas responded by reiterating its conditions for ending hostilities. The group stated it would only agree to a ceasefire if Israel fully withdrew from Gaza and ended the war. Hamas added it was “ready to immediately sit at the negotiating table to discuss the release of all prisoners in exchange for a clear declaration of ending the war, a complete withdrawal from the Gaza Strip, and the formation of a committee of independent Palestinians to run the Gaza Strip and to start its work immediately.”
Conclusion
The attack at the Jerusalem bus stop underscores the escalating violence in the region and highlights the human toll of the ongoing conflict. As Israeli leaders promise stronger measures against those responsible, and Hamas signals conditions for negotiations, the deadly incident has further complicated already fragile discussions surrounding a ceasefire and long-term peace in Gaza and Israel.
