A Web of Deceit and Affairs
Prosecutors argued that James Craig’s motive was fueled by financial stress and his extramarital affairs, particularly one with a Texas orthodontist, Dr. Karin Cain, whom he met at a dental conference in Las Vegas. Cain testified that in just 18 days, she and Craig exchanged over 4,000 messages. “This was the first man I had a one-on-one convo with in 30 years,” Cain told jurors. “It felt exciting, like a high school girl… It felt like love.” She recounted that the messages became romantic and eventually sexual. Cain testified that Craig told her he was newly divorced and living alone, claims she later admitted were false. “Yes, a lot of what the defendant told me wasn’t true,” she said under cross-examination. Just three days into their texting relationship, Craig had written, “I’ve fallen in love with you so deeply that the list of attributes has become endless.”
Another woman, Carrie Hageseth, testified that she met Craig through the dating site Seeking.com and that their relationship was transactional in nature. She said Craig paid for her daughter’s car bills and, during one dinner, referenced the horror film The Purge. Hageseth said Craig remarked that if he could “purge” someone, it would be his wife. She testified that Craig described in detail how to kill someone via injection without leaving evidence. Her testimony further supported the prosecution’s portrayal of Craig as leading a secretive double life and planning Angela’s death in a calculated manner.
Together, the testimony from Cain and Hageseth suggested a clear motive and intent behind the poisoning. Prosecutors emphasized the quantity and tone of Craig’s communications with multiple women to argue that the murder was deliberate and meticulously planned.
